Welcome

Hello, thanks for stopping by. Would you like a cup of coffee? My name is Nicole Pearce and I live in Fairbanks, Alaska with my partner David and our two dogs Brody and Arrluk. I live in the quintessential Alaska Cabin, with one exception...running water and indoor plumbing. Most of my friends do not have these luxuries and actually enjoy living without them. Not me...I like my hot shower at the end of a hard day. I can't imagine washing all  my dishes without running water. That doesn't mean I don't get the most from Alaska living. I enjoy being able to walk from my front door and pick all the cranberries and blueberries I can fit in my freezer each year. I love to sit quietly and sleep in during the winter and in the summer enjoy the endless days. This is my space where I reflect on the joys and frustrations of living in Interior Alaska. Welcome!

  1. I received your comment on my blog, didn't know the best way to get back in touch, and couldn't find my original comment. I think it was the gluten free raspberry cupcakes I ended up doing and they were sooo good. The funny thing is I got back on your blog and saw my old friend Cara "liked" you! Small world.Love your blog! Pétra

  10. I so enjoy your blog! So much so that I decided to "review" it as part of my blog's "50 States? 50 Blogs!" feature. I'd love to be able to link to your blog in my KT's Faves section -- let me know if this is OK. Keep up the good work! (Google won't let me sign in, but my blog is stumbledontotheblogwagon.blogspot.com)

  11. Hey Nicole - just got your comment on my blog, but couldn't find an email address for you to respond. Yeah - when I am cooking I don't worry much about proper measurement. Usually I free pour liquids. When I am baking I use the proper wet/dry measuring tools though - have to be exact!

    1. Glad to hear it, sometimes when folks are just starting out they don't know the difference and can cause disappointing results.

  12. Hi Nicole,

This is Mike the new P&R Director. Just got off the phone with David, and he told me about your blog, so I had to check it out! My wife Mary and I are foodies as well, and it was great to see some of these wonderful recipes. I've now got a list of "gotta-dos." I look forward to meeting you in person, and have a great holiday season!

I've recently moved back to Alaska and am dying to know where you got the plates with the moose and blue flower. I am in need of new plates. Now I have my heart set on these!

  15. Amber- Frances Schulz. She sells through the Fairbanks Potters Guild. They are at the Farmer's Market all summer and also do several of the holiday bazaars around Fairbanks. I had her card not that long ago, let me see if I can find her contact info. The plates in the photo are small, but she also makes regular dinner plates on occasion. I'm sure she would do a special order.

  19. So wonderful! I was busy making six loaves of nisu today in Hancock, MI with the second recipe version that I've found. They turned out great, mostly, but I was looking for some ideas on how to tweak the flour...the dough was a bit heavier than I'd like, and I happened upon your site. What luck!

I love AK as well, spending three beautiful summers there. No, never did do a winter, but my sister lives in Anchorage and my parents used to live in Fairbanks. My sis keeps us up to date on the snowfall. :o) Looking forward to your posts.

  20. Hi, I was, I believe, at your blog site, where you discuss your SFO trip and I was reading about the tea salad when we had an energy blip, and I can't find it on your site but wanted to continue reading about your restaurant choices in SFO. HELP, where could it have gone to? You had the salad at Burma Superstar on 309 Clement Ave, but the other places looked interesting, too. Like your blog. Thanks, Kathleen

  22. Hi, I came across your site from the Alaska Master Gardener site http://alaskamastergardener.blogspot.com/ and I look at too many food blogs but I particularly like yours and especially the lighting of your photos, so if you don't mind passing on what you do to get that, if its a trade secret I'll understand. The brussel sprout recipe I'm definitely going to try (love camp) but mine plants did not do well this year even though I live in Palmer. Big sad, not sure why, although it was cold summer, still...I try to blog too (using blogspot) but mine pale immnensely and need a lot of improvements. Thank you.

    1. Thomas,
Thank you for your kind words. No trade secrets here. This site really is just a hobby for me, although one that has seen many nice rewards over the years. I think my biggest secret is that I do this for fun and don't take it too seriously. All the photos in the posts are taken with a point and shoot camera, although that is soon to change as I just bought a DSLR last Friday. The photos in the banner at top are taken with my phone, I use an app called PRO HDR and then usually use the blur tool on Instagram with them as well. You are correct that the light is probably what makes them stand out. I just prefer the look of the early morning and late afternoon sunlight. I don't have any fancy lighting equipment (although I must say the sun is a very impressive light source), everything is natural light. I find photography to be pretty fun and like to experiment with it in many ways. I shoot a lot that never makes it to this site. Lately I am really enjoying working with dark backgrounds and it really highlights the light and the food. In my opinion you don't really need a lot of fancy equipment to take a nice picture. The best thing you can do is practice with whatever equipment you have. Hope that helps.
